From Fighting Scot to SEC Coach of the Year

Lamont Paris ’96, head men’s basketball coach at the University of South Carolina and 2024 SEC Coach of the Year, credits his coaching journey to the foundational experiences he gained at The College of Wooster. A standout player on Wooster’s championship teams, Paris initially had no plans to coach until legendary coach Steve Moore invited him to join the staff at his alma mater. His time coaching at Wooster and earning a master’s degree at DePauw, where he coached future NBA exec Brad Stevens, solidified his passion for the profession. Paris went on to major roles at Akron and Wisconsin, helping lead the Badgers to multiple NCAA tournament successes. His coaching philosophy, grounded in connection, teamwork, and overcoming obstacles, reflects his Wooster roots. Today, he applies those values to elevate South Carolina’s program.
